Grupo Dominguis is awarded its first public contract for the decommissioning of a nuclear facility in Italy
A team of up to 20 professionals will work for 16 months at the nuclear installations of the Centro Interforze Studi Applicazioni Militari (CISAM), which houses the RTS-1 Galileo Galilei nuclear research reactor. The contract amounts to more than 3.5 million Euros
The Italian Ministry of Defence has commissioned the Grupo Dominguis to undertake the dismantling of the RTS-1 Galileo Galilei, an open pool type research reactor using light water as moderator and coolant that has a nominal power level of 5 MWth.
This project, which has a budget of more than 3.5 million Euros, includes activities for the dismantling of the research reactor at the CISAM, the centre for studies for military applications located in San Piero a Grado, close to the city of Pisa.
The work awarded to Lainsa consists of the treatment of the water from the RTS-1 Galileo Galilei reactor pool and other storage tanks, with a view to it being transferred to authorised installations following radiological verification. The team will also be in charge of removing all the active components from inside the reactor pool and will decontaminate, dismantle, segregate and condition all the activated or contaminated elements housed in the reactor building and irradiation channel.
These tasks, which will last 16 months and involve a team of up to 20 Italian and Spanish professionals, will be performed in two stages. The first will include the determination of a formula that guarantees that the approximately 750 m3 of treated water are in radiological conditions suitable for safe disposal.
In the second stage the water will be processed and the activated and contaminated materials will be removed from the pool and other areas of the facility and managed in accordance with the resulting radiological characterisation. Lainsa, a Grupo Dominguis company, is the national leader in decontamination, dismantling, radiological protection and industrial cleaning services at nuclear power plants and radioactive facilities. Its efficiency, response capacity and technological differentiation allow it to provide added value solutions adapted to the specific requirements of each project.
This public bidding process in Italy offers Lainsa the opportunity to position itself as a reference in the decommissioning of nuclear facilities at international level.
