GDES embarks on a new decommissioning project in Italy
Our company has been engaged by Sogin to dismantle the steam generators at the Latina nuclear power plant.
The iconic steam generators of the Latina nuclear power plant (GCR-Magnox, 210 MW) in Lazio, Italy, will be dismantled by the GDES decommissioning team following a contract recently awarded by Sogin, the state-owned company responsible for the decommissioning of nuclear power plants and the management of radioactive waste in Italy.
Each steam generator in Latina’s primary circuit weighs 600 tonnes, with a height of 24 metres and an external diameter of 5.7 metres. The project awarded to a group of companies led by GDES includes the design, preliminary works, containment, cutting and disposal of the materials.
A complex project with an estimated duration of 3 years that will begin in the last quarter of 2023.
This is the second major decommissioning project to be carried out by the GDES group of companies in Italy, following work on the treatment of pool water and the dismantling of equipment and components of the RTS-1 “G.Galilei” research reactor. This new contract consolidates the international standing of GDES in decommissioning services for large components at nuclear facilities.
